Whats wrong with my scanner?

I have a Lexmark 2500 Series and when I just installed a new cartridge for ink, the scan button on the printer works and it scanned alright. But when I just use the scanner randomly, it works when I push the scan button on the printer and I check Task Manager but it doesn’t really scan. But when I go through the software on my Vista, it scans alright.
I don’t know if this will help, but the software is open but not on the screen. Its down by the clock sitting there like “oh hi there”.

You have to go through the software so the scan can work. If you just press the button without opening the software, it won’t scan. Period.
