Why would donating ink cartridges be lucrative?

I see lots of places that have “recycling” programs, which are obviously shams, since the places don’t have an ecological “bone” in their body. What would they want with the ink cartridges?

Some of these dishonest programs are probably selling these cartridges to some big businesses that actually payout cash for them. For example, the Castle Ink program found here http://www.castleink.com/_recycle-ink-cartridges.html pays cash. So what some of these programs could be doing is taking the donated cartridges that people give them and in turn selling them to businesses like Castle Ink for cash.
