Ink Cartridges Money
Nov/100

Does Staples lose money when I give them an empty ink cartridge in return for a $3 off $3 purchase coupon?
I have traded it a lot of empty ink cartridges to staples and I use the coupons to buy many small items at Staples for just a few pennies after the coupon. I really doubt that some recycle company will pay Staples $3 or more for every catridge that I have turned in. The coupon has a potential to offer a 100% discount off many items in the store. How can this ink recycling program be financially beneficial to Staples?
I worked for Office Depot and they offer the almost the same program that Staples does. They provide either $3 off a customer’s order, or give the customer a free ream of paper. To answer your first question, no, Staples does not lose money when you exchange your empty cartridge. They remanufacture these cartridges and sell them as Staples brand cartridges. This lessens the cost they pay on cartridges as they are simply using recycled ones, and brings you back into their store to buy more cartridges. They make MAD money off of their recycling program because of this fact alone.
It is financially beneficial to Staples for the above reason and for the fact that it gets you back in Staples to buy more stuff, and gives you a positive feeling about buying items from Staples because they are “giving” you something. This positive feeling will in turn make consumers buy more items from Staples. It is a win/win situation for Staples.
