Compatible or after-market epson ink cartridges for photo printers: worth it?
I’ve been looking to save money on epson r1800 cartridges, which are expensive. I’ve seen after-market or compatible cartridges that say they are ISO9001 certified. Does that mean anything significant in terms of quality? Also, I’ve heard different things about the inks being as good as or not as good as the brand name. But I’m more concerned about the consistency of the colors. Would the compatible cartridges be more likely to have a range of tints or shades depending on the batch?
I have 2 Epson R1800 printers, how I ended up with 2 is a long story, one has genuine Epson cartridges and I use that to print my gallery prints and for clients. The other has 3rd party inks and I use that to check printing, document printing and for my entries to local club competitions, I use the same profile for printing on both machines and the prints are indistinguishable from each other, even using the colorimeter I use to calibrate my printers, the RGB readings from the test swatches are EXACTLY the same! Which is amazing as I was expecting to see a variation in the print heads of the two machines, but they are identical.
I have never had any issues with colour balance or batch variation (now using my sixth set) and the 3rd party inks seem to need fewer cleaning cycles.
The only difference (yet to be proved) is longevity, the 3rd party inks are dye inks the Epson are, of course, pigment inks.
