Why won’t Dell printer print?
I have an older Dell A920 ink jet printer. It has always worked fine. When I moved I had stored it for several months but now set it up so I can print. The power is on and the cable is attached to the computer. I downloaded the software, I checked the ink levels – the color is half full and I put a brand new black cartridge and the computer shows it as 100% full. When I scan documents it works but when I try to print, it makes the sound like it’s printing with the head going back and forth but a completely white document with no print comes out. Any ideas what the problem could be please???? Thanks.
In case it makes any difference, I have since gotten a router for my roommate’s wireless computer to share my connection but I myself continue to use my desktop, and have the cable attached to the back of my tower like before.
Not sure if this will help, but here it goes:
I would start with a little basic trouble shooting. It sounds like a communications issue with the printer. Seeing as the printer prints fine when scanning, something is not telling the printer to actually release ink when print job is sent to the computer.
1) The easiest thing to try is a different port on the back of the computer. This assumes that you HAVE annother port on the back of the computer. If it’s USB connected, just unplug it from one port and plug it into a different slot, then try printing again. If its parallel, you’ll need to change the port the printer is assigned to in Printers and Faxes, under the controll panel.
2) If that doesn’t work, try deleting the printer and re-installing the print driver. Also a good time to make sure you have the right driver. For instance, drivers change depending on the Operating System (XP versus Vista). If you grabbed the wrong one, that might be the issue. I put a link below to Dell Supports page for drivers for your printer.
3) If neither of these made a diff, try a different printer cable. I know it sounds weak, but printer cables can break. Ink Jet printers are not very sophisticated and if they don’t get every bit of info they need, they don’t just “make due”.
Like I said, not sure what this issue is exactly. But this is what I would start with. Good luck and hope you get this figured out.
