HP DeskJet 5940 Review
While it might not be a part of the Photosmart collection, the DeskJet 5940 is one more solid all-rounder from HP. In fact, HP claims you can print whatever you desire using the 5940, this includes borderless pictures anywhere up to A4 size.
Getting the 5940 outside of the box, we could quickly tell that build quality is a step higher than just about anything else within the entry-level class. The top is manufactured out of brushed aluminium and the durable front-mounted paper trays flick upwards in order to leave a minimal footprint in the event the printer’s not in use. Additionally, there is automated cartridge alignment and a paper sensor, that registers what type of paper is inserted and can change printing quality automatically.
The 5940 is not the priciest entry-level printer. Admittedly, there isn’t any TFT or card reader – just about all you get is a PictBridge port intended for printing pictures directly from a digital camera. Behind is the USB 2 port.

Meaning prints showed realistic skin tones, well-saturated colours and also outstanding levels of fine detail.
You will need to print on Premium Plus photo paper to get the highest quality, but it’s easily worthwhile. We’d no complaints with the HP’s mono photograph quality either – fine points weren’t missing inside dark parts plus absolutely no grain was apparent.
For text, the DeskJet ended up being average. It printed at 3.5ppm in normal mode but draft speed was excellent; at 13ppm it was the third quickest on test and also quality was very fair. A 6 x 4in picture printed in best mode in just within one minute, 30 seconds, whilst the A4 montage needed three-and-a-half minutes.
On the software front, there’s HP Image Zone. Including a simple picture editor plus a printing wizard. The driver is actually user friendly while offering all sorts of things except a print progress indicator. Nevertheless, we liked the Real-life Digital Photography tab, which provides quick fixes regarding typical problems such as red-eye, powerful backlighting as well as blurry images.
The machine uses a pair of HP DeskJet 5940 ink cartridges – either black and colour for everyday printing, and a colour/photo combination for high-quality pictures. Between them, the photo and colour cartridges possess six colours – the C, M and Y mixture inside the high-capacity 344 colour cartridge, in addition to black, light cyan and light magenta inside the 348 photo cartridge.
