Look for good and economical all in one printer (Epson prefered)?

I am a student and I print sometimes. I am looking for a good all in one printer, but not expensive. It doesn’t have to be high performance. Average or above average quality will be ok.

I heard HP is cheap, but it costs a lot for ink cartridge. Thus, I go for Epson.

There are Epson Stylus CX4400, Epson Stylus CX7400, Epson Stylus CX5000, Epson Stylus CX6000, Epson Stylus photo RX 580….

Can anyone give me some suggestion (like how it works, the costs for ink, and so on)? It doesn’t have to be these models though~

Economical Epson? Maybe once upon a time.

The newer HP printers are much cheaper on ink, the system is far more economical, and HP machines are generally more reliable if you don’t buy the cheapy ones.

For example:

The good HP and Epson printers both have 6 ink cartridges. To purchase all 6 cartridges for an Epson will cost you 6 x $15 ($90). On the HP 6-cartridge printers you can purchase all 6 cartridges in a combo pack (which also includes photo paper) for $36. To give you an idea of the printing costs: cost per photo with an Epson = 40 cents; cost per photo with an HP system = 24 cents.

Epson cartridges waste a lot of your ink and for this reason there was a lawsuit filed against them (see link below). The new HP systems on the other hand are very economical on ink. The ink is actually vaccumed out of the cartridges so that pretty much every last drop is used up. This is called scalable-printing technology.

Of course, it’s all up to you. However, I have an HP Photosmart C5180 and it is the best machine that I have ever used as far as printers go. Ink replacements are inexpensive ($10 each for the color, $20 for the larger black cartridge) and even though the cartridges have a little less ink than the Epson machines, the HP’s last longer because of a much better ink management system. Either way, I hope you enjoy your purchase. Epson printers are good printers, they are just expensive to maintain. I’ve included some links that you may find helpful.
