How do I clean an HP ink-jet print head (successfully)?

I’m getting white streaks in the black color. I ran the self-clean utility several times. no difference. I took out the print head and wipe it with a damp cloth. no difference. I read somewhere about turning off the printer overnight to let the ink clog soften. And what exactly do they mean by “soften”? I’m trying not to have to buy a new print head. so any ideas would be helpful. thanks!

You can try this method to see if it helps any.

Turn on the hot water until warm
Put about 1/2 inches of water in a cup
Put the print head portion (where the ink comes out) in for about a minute
Dry off the cartridge using a soft tissue.
Re-insert the cartridge into the printer.
Run the normal cleaning software routine a few times
